Pre-Professional Training Opportunities

Dr. Kurtz closed his NYC offices in November, 2024. All of the training programs below are now operated out of Square One Psychology, under the leadership of Dr. Zohra Chahal. Dr. Kurtz is still the Senior Consulting Psychologist to these programs. Email drz@squareonenyc.com for information.

We train Post-Doctoral Fellows, graduate externs, and undergraduate students in psychology, mental health counseling, and other mental health disciplines. Fellowships, internships, and externships occur throughout the year, including academic year and summer-only experiences.

We also provide training to licensed mental health professionals, teachers, and speech language pathologists who work in our selective mutism intensive treatment programs. See below for all of our various open positions.

Mighty Mouth Kids Camp is our intensive program for children with SM. Dr. Kurtz first developed this group intervention at the NYU Child Study Center and later brought to the Child Mind Institute in 2010. Treatment is focused on helping campers to face their fears and learn to use their voice through their journey from silence to brave talking. Counselors are paired with campers individually to support them in reaching specific goals. One-week sessions take place in February and August each year

Undergraduate Internship Opportunities

Kurtz Psychology hosts undergraduate interns for our summer treatment programs and for our in-office clinical treatments. These are great opportunities for students to gain comprehensive clinical experience working with both disruptive children and children with Selective Mutism (SM).

Interns receive specialized training in both Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) as well as the adaptation of the model for children with SM (PCIT-SM). Our certified staff, including Dr. Kurtz, a global trainer in PCIT and the developer of the Brave Buddies model, and Dr. Chahal, a certified PCIT therapist, will conduct all the training. Live coaching and daily feedback will be provided in addition to the training days.

Read below for further information about the internship positions!

Undergraduate Internships – Applications OPEN for the Fall 2025 + Spring 2026 Training Year

If you are interested in applying for Square One Psychology’s undergraduate internship, please look at their website here. This internship is for advanced undergraduates seeking pre-professional mental health training experience in clinical behavioral interventions. Interns participate in our didactic seminars and collaborate with team members and mentors on research and other ongoing projects. Importantly, our Summer Clinical Interns play a crucial role in our Mighty Mouth Kids Camp both by helping to plan it and by working as counselors during the camp week. Interns will set up treatment sessions, perform data entry, and assist on other projects such as video-clipping and social media assistance, all while observing live treatment sessions of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and other treatments methods we utilize.

Requirements for training opportunities:

  • Availability for above dates and times
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree or enrollment in a 4 year accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated previous work with children.
